Errant

You decide to pick a bunk in the middle where you're close enough to the stairs in case anything happens, but just out of reach from any water splashing through from the deck. It only takes you a few moments scanning the rows of hammocks to find one that suits your needs and is still empty. You notice that a lot of the bunks are empty. It's odd that so many people are already on board but haven't seen to their quarters yet. You don't think much about it as you swing your knapsack over your shoulder and onto the suspended bed. You ready yourself to go back to the deck when a gruff voice stops you.

"You'll want to claim that bed before you head up." You turn to see the voice came from the hammock beside you, who's tenant was swaying gently with the ship's motion. A wide brim hat covers almost his whole face save for just the littlest hint of a stubbled chin. He's dressed very similarly to you though where your armor is plate and chain his is thick leather and hide. "They'll take you for all you're worth if you leave that stuff just lying around."

Confused you ask him what he means; he chuckles softly to himself before swinging his feet to the floor and making his way to your bedside. You get a much clearer look at him now. He has tired eyes that carry a smug amusement in them. His hair under the hat is straight and dark ending just below his earlobe. He gives your a wry smile before pointing above your head to the hook that holds your hammock aloft. "There's a little wood placard there, you see it?" You look and see the little rectangle almost hidden amidst the ropes and rigging. "They've got them enchanted, put your thumb on the center and it registers the bed as yours."

You give him an incredulous look, you've never heard of magic being used like that. Then again you're nautical experience had been very limited until now. But then again, this man may be trying to to pull one over on you. Well, should you believe him?
