/Summary:

"Shepard was an orphan raised on the streets of the great megatropolises covering Earth. He escaped the life of petty crime and underworld gangs by enlisting with the Alliance military when He turned eighteen."

During the Skyllian Blitz (2176?), Shepard demonstrated his extreme leadership when leading ground forces on Elysium. Caught on shore leave in the planet's capital Illyria prior to the Batarian attack of the Vetus system, Shepard was quick to react to Batarian ground forces. Cut-off from the Alliance garrison, Shepard used his concealed side-arm to protect civilians from being seized by slavers and controlled the nearby crowd to push them to retreat into nearby shops. Shepard worked his way through the streets, rallying with police officers and assisting them in fighting off enemy troops. Reaching the police station, Shepard contacted the police chief to gain insight on the situation in the field. Officers near the center of the city reported that any human civilian the Batarians didn't gun down were being congregated in city hall, the enemy stronghold. When the Batarians invade, they do not often seek to conquer; they instead conduct raids that rob their targets of resources and civilians for purposes in their extensive slave trade. Realizing that if they didn't retake city hall soon, Batarian shuttles would quickly arrive to claim their new slaves before Alliance Naval reinforcements could intervene. Shepard took control of the situation, directing Illyria police forces in a daring maneuver to recover city hall. Shepard later commented that his involvement with gangs on Earth granted him considerable experience in fighting within the condensed streets of a city. Shepard directed the police forces to enact guerilla tactics to divide Batarian forces away from city hall. Snipers then eliminated Batarian guards stationed near the vulnerable group of civilians. This gave Shepard and police the opportunity to storm the building with a frontal assault, overwhelming the Batarians. After successfully securing city hall and the imprisoned citizens, Shepard and his forces now held the tactical advantage and were able to effectively repel all further invading ground forces with little difficulty until Alliance reinforcements arrived. Shepards bravery prevented the over 100,000 civilians residing in Illyria from being overrun by Batarians as well as saving the 200 non-combatants that were nearly abducted. Shepard was awarded the Silver Star for his courageous actions. After fully proving his extreme potential on Elysium, Shepard was also nominated and accepted into the N7 program.

On the year ????, Shepard and a small unit of N7 soldiers were sent on a mission to resupply the colonists of Akuze while covertly being truly sent to investigate after the colony went dark. Normally, this would have been a job for the Alliance Navy's Colonial Manifest branch (ANCM), but Akuze was a valuable asset to Alliance interests given that it REDACTED. After landing and making contact with the Alliance, Shepard's team were ordered to go radio silent for the next three days to avoid detection by suspected unknown alien assailants. This proved to nearly be Shepard's undoing, as soon after making contact, they were attacked by a rogue thresher maw. The offspring of these creatures are known to be able to transit through space to other planets via spores, but the long life-span of these creatures makes that a seldom occurrence, which is why Akuze was assumed to be free of such a vicious threat. Shepard's team were hunted down by the maw, losing one of their team before even being able to counterattack. However, the team was well trained and swiftly responded with their heaviest and most destructive weapons, lobbing grenades and biotic attacks at the creature to slow it down. They lured it underneath a nearby tunnel and used the last of their explosives to cause the tunnel ceiling to collapse on the maw, temporarily incapacitating it. The team regrouped to form a plan. With their explosives depleted, the unit was relatively unequipped to handle such a monsterous foe, so Shepard's CO, Sergeant Kozuku, ultimately decided that they would rely on Shepard's trained precision as a soldier. Sergeant Kozuku and Corporal Toombs would offer suppressing fire while Shepard would make for higher ground to get the best angle to snipe the maw. As the medic of the team, Toombs had some knowledge of alien anatomy, even being taught weak points of a thresher maw for just such a contingency. If Shepard could fire a round directly under the entrance to the maw's mouth, he would likely rupture the acid sack the maw used to spew viscous fluid at prey. This sac was normally protected by the maw's hard exterior, so Shepard's team would have to provoke the maw to open its mouth to attack with its acid and give Shepard a clear shot. During the fighting, Corporal Toombs was attacked by the long tongue of the maw and swallowed whole. Growing desperate, Kozuku moved into a vulnerable position near the maw to further provoke it. This was successful as Shepard took the shot before the maw attacked, causing the creature's internal acids to explode everywhere near its position. Kozuku was bathed in this fluid, dying in seconds. Shepard noted he could not risk attempting to retrieve Toombs from the belly of the maw without risking a similar fate to Kozuku. With all communication equipment broken by the battle with the maw, Shepard was forced to avoid other avid predators and live off the land since whatever food remained at the nearby colony was quickly claimed by local wildlife. It was not until early the fourth day of the mission that alliance command suspected something was amiss and they mobilized a larger force to investigate. Two cruisers and company of marines landed on Akuze late into the fourth day of the mission. They found a bruised and dirty Shepard who was rather sick due to some of the local flora he consumed being poisonous. Shepard was immediately shuttled to the cruiser for medical treatment. The marines investigated the colony and confirmed the maw was the cause of the destruction. No survivors were found. A separate N7 unit accompanying the company then inherited Shepard's mission to investigate REDACTED. Shepard was commended for his bravery and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

Shepard's early life as a criminal on the streets made him rather undisciplined, as noted by his training office in the N7 program. However, his ability to rally and lead allies as demonstrated on Elysium shows his capability to get results in unexpected situations. Shepard's experience on Akuza has certainly left it's mark, as after the event his peers noted he appeared to be less friendly and more pragmatic than before. Regardless Shepard's resilience on to survive life-threatening situations as well as his impressive leadership make him a worthy choice for conducting risky operations. Similar to most humans born on Earth, Shepard does harbor some degree of xenophobic prejudice and this has created some alteractions when attempting to utilize Shepard in joint training exercises with alien forces, but these issues appear to be minor."/
