/Summary:

"With both parents in the military, Shepard spent his childhood on ships and stations as they transferred from posting to posting, never staying in one location for more than a few years. Following in his parents' footsteps, he enlisted at the age of eighteen in the Alliance marines.

During the Skyllian Blitz (2176?), Shepard demonstrated his extreme leadership and impressive piloting skills (likely acquired through his spacer upbringing) when he led three other pilots in their fighters and together they nearly single-handedly crushed the right flank of the Batarian Naval fleet through a daring manevere. The four pilots, equipped with Mass Effect bombs known as "hull busters", dodged cruiser fire and enemy fighter pursuit while making a b-line for one of the Batarian fleet's two carriers. The design of the Batarian cruisers offered two shielded openings to the hangar to allow for more efficient mobility of fighters. This design proved to be a flaw as Shepard's squad timed their attack perfectly to be able to enter the hangar from one side just as the shields guarding the entrance were being lowered to allow the next wave of Batarian fighters to deploy. Upon entering the hangar, Shepard and his wingmen quickly dropped their payload and exited the hangar from the other unshielded opening. The squad was not even a kilometer away from the cruiser before the payload engaged, ripping apart the carrier from the inside-out with oscillating mass effect fields. The carrier's shields quickly fell, allowing Alliance cruisers to dispatch the enemy ship from far range. With half their fighters out of commission and their right flank completely exposed, Batarian forces were quickly overwhelmed and forced to retreat after they lost another two cruisers. Shepard has been criticized due to the perceived riskiness of this maneuver, but he defended himself by explaining how through his history as spacer, he had seen plenty of different ships to speculate that such a maneuver was possible. He went on to say that after inquiring with Alliance Intelligence Branch (AIB) regarding the suspected dimensions of the hangar, he felt confident that not only would a double-sided hangar make the maneuver possible, but the height of the hangar offered just enough space for Alliance fighters to enter the hangar above deploying enemy fighters and come out unscathed. AIB later confirmed that this information had been relayed to Shepard during combat. When further asked why he did not ask for permission from Alliance Command, Shepard replied that he was worried the idea would get 'Shot down' so he made a judgement call. Despite further grilling by Alliance brass, it was undeniable that Shepard's dauntless choice may have been what guaranteed victory space battle of the Skyllian Blitz. Shepard was awarded the Silver Star for his courage. After fully proving his extreme potential, Shepard was also nominated and accepted into the N7 program.

On the year ????, Shepard and a small unit of N7 soldiers were sent on a mission to resupply the colonists of Akuze while covertly being truly sent to investigate after the colony went dark. Normally, this would have been a job for the Alliance Navy's Colonial Manifest branch (ANCM), but Akuze was a valuable asset to Alliance interests given that it REDACTED. After landing and making contact with the Alliance, Shepard's team were ordered to go radio silent for the next three days to avoid detection by suspected unknown alien assailants. This proved to nearly be Shepard's undoing, as soon after making contact, they were attacked by a rogue thresher maw. The offspring of these creatures are known to be able to transit through space to other planets via spores, but the long life-span of these creatures makes that a seldom occurrence, which is why Akuze was assumed to be free of such a vicious threat. Shepard's team were hunted down by the maw, losing one of their team before even being able to counterattack. However, the team was well trained and swiftly responded with their heaviest and most destructive weapons, lobbing grenades and biotic attacks at the creature to slow it down. They lured it underneath a nearby tunnel and used the last of their explosives to cause the tunnel ceiling to collapse on the maw, temporarily incapacitating it. The team regrouped to form a plan. With their explosives nearly depleted, the unit was relatively unequipped to handle such a monsterous foe, so Shepard's CO, Sergeant Kozuku, ultimately decided that they would rely on Shepard's training as an adept biotic. Sergeant Kozuku and Corporal Toombs would offer suppressing fire to give Shepard an opening to immobilize the maw with a stasis field. Kozuku and Toombs would then lob the rest of their grenades into maw's gaping mouth. As the medic of the team, Toombs had some knowledge of alien anatomy, even being taught weak points of a thresher maw for just such a contingency. If the team could insert explosives into the maw's unarmored interior, they could roast the beast from the inside. During the fighting, Corporal Toombs was attacked by the long tongue of the maw and swallowed whole, knocking a primed grenade out of his hand in the process. Kozuku seized the prime grenade and tossed it into the maw while it was in stasis. Unfortunately, the grenade exploded before Kozuku could escape to a safe distance, causing the creature's internal acids to explode everywhere near his position. Kozuku was bathed in this fluid, dying in seconds. Shepard noted he could not risk attempting to retrieve Toombs from the belly of the maw without risking a similar fate to Kozuku. With all communication equipment broken by the battle with the maw, Shepard was forced to avoid other avid predators and live off the land since whatever food remained at the nearby colony was quickly claimed by local wildlife. It was not until early the fourth day of the mission that alliance command suspected something was amiss and they quickly mobilized a larger force to investigate. Two cruisers and company of marines landed on Akuze late into the fourth day of the mission. They quickly found a bruised and dirty Shepard who was rather sick due to some of the local flora he consumed being poisonous. Shepard was immediately shuttled to the cruiser for medical treatment. The marines investigated the colony and confirmed the maw was the cause of the destruction. No survivors were found. A separate N7 unit accompanying the company then inherited Shepard's mission to investigate REDACTED. Shepard was commended for his bravery and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

Shepard's valor in military service is unquestionable. Being the legacy of his veteran parents has instilled greatly loyalty in Shepard toward the Alliance. Although his experience no Akuze has notably shaken his dedication somewhat, he still displays great leadership. Apparently, being a spacer made him avoid personal attachments and this trait was only made worse after Akuze causing some of his subordinates to remark his cold nature. Although, Shepard's subordinates thoroughly express their loyalty to him as they explain how Shepard always always comes through in the worst of situations. Shepard's vast experience in space has made him fairly knowledgeable of other sentient species and the Alliance has relied on him multiple times in military situations where diplomacy is required. This is unique given the rather anti-alien sentiments expressed by most soldiers especially since most of them have had to engage against Batarian forces."/
