In Love With an Aven

“There was one girl,” he begins, and you releases him from your embrace. “We used to be very close when we were fledglings. We would pretend we were married and had a brood of hatchlings. But then our ruler died. She was the one with the golden wings which meant she was born to become ruler after the queen passed away. She took her position with dignity and became a full grown Aven overnight. She was wed away although she was still very young. She has a big brood now like we had always dreamed. But their father was not me. She is always so sad when I see her, but she cannot betray her role as queen.”
“I’m sorry.” I squeak out. Shocked by his sudden admission of his past, and by how much his species suffered from mine. “I’ll be your queen if you let me.” You whisper nervously.
He suddenly looks down, pulled from his memory by the sound of your voice. “You want me?”
“Of course.” You smile at him. You barely know him, but your heart melts at the sound of his voice.
“Can we have a big brood like I dreamed?” He asks me excitedly.
“We’ll see.” You responded nervously, having never wanted children.
He nods respectfully, though he doesn’t seem to understand. “How do I make you my queen?” He asks excitedly. You smile. You took a short detour to the courthouse to get married that day before making it back to your apartment.
