Feudal Japan in this story has no humans, only anthro animals, and instead of hundreds of domains, there are only 4; the Okami Domain, inhabited by the Okami People, occupies the western regions, and is ruled by the renowned leader, Lord Okami Kenshin, the son of the warlord Okami Rin. This domain is on the verge of rebellion, because some people view Okami Kenshin as somebody who would side with their mortal enemy, the neighboring Kurosawa, because of the wedding between Lady Kurosawa Kazehana and him, which is why they would rather side with the leader's younger brother, Okami Ryoichi.
The Kurosawa Domain, inhabited by the Kitsune People, occupies the central region and is ruled by Lady Kurosawa Kazehana, the only daughter of the late Lord Kurosawa Hayashi. This domain is also on the verge of rebellion, because the people the Taiyo Domain, where the dog people live, and the Tsuki Domain, where the cat people live. 3 clans occupy the main island: the Kurosawa in the west, the Okami in the central region, and the Taiyo in the east, while 1 clan, the Tsuki, occupies where Hokkaido would be. At this point in time, the land is in the middle of the Taisen War.
