The Middle Mary Sue

You are about to run and jump, but a piercing, terrified scream makes you stop and turn. Goldflower is being backed up a tree by a massive spider bigger than any you have yet seen, her jewelled sword lying useless on the grass out of reach.

You look to Esmyralda, but she is busy battling two spiders on the other side of the clearing (rather vaguely, as the Author still has no idea what a katana is). It is up to you to save your companion.

But doing so would use up the few seconds you have to escape. If you go to help Goldflower, you will have no choice but to stand and fight.

What will you do?
