You feel it drop into a freefall. You hand tightens around the handrail as you plummet down the shaft. Your feet it first and you feel your body follow through with the momentum as your the rest of your body travels into the ground--legs or no legs.

You body just made the equivalence of jumping out a six story building and landing vertically. The ground wins.
