ENGL 102 CYOA
A few seconds pass as you walk outside to answer the phone. You answer with a hesitant “Hello?”. The voice on the other end sounds very familiar.
“Hello, is this Matt?”
You would never forget this voice, this voice is to the one who you love the most.
“Katie? What are you doing? Why are you calling me from a random number? And most importantly, why are you calling me now, after all the times that you sent me to voicemail?” You ask with excitement.
“I’m on a payphone and don’t have much time left to explain, just please meet me at the McDonald’s between East and Main. I’ll be waiting there for you.” Katie explains hesitantly before she hangs up.
“Finally!” Excitement rushes through your body as now not everything is awful, contrary to how you previously felt. “I’ll do anything to stay with Katie. I need her in my life.”
You walk back into the bar, pay your check, say your goodbyes to Jim, and run over to the location that Katie gave to you. The words “I’ll do anything to stay with Katie” keep resounding through your head as you continue towards to location. As you walk inside, you look around, Katie isn’t anywhere to be seen.
“Go figure, this world actually does suck.” you state outloud.
Someone creeps out from behind you, “Long time no see... How have you been? I’m sorry that I’ve been MIA. I can explain…”
“Katie! She didn’t actually leave, she stayed here to meet up with me!” you think to yourself. A smile escapes from your face as you see her in front of you again.
You and her take a seat and she starts explaining what happened after the fight occurred.
“I shouldn’t have gotten mad over something as stupid as that. I’m sorry Matt.” she states softly.
“It’s okay, everyone goes through stupid fights. I’m sorry as well. I’m just glad that you finally contacted me back. Why didn’t you ever pick up your phone when I called?” you ask.
Katie starts explaining, “After the fight broke out, I ran away from your apartment and while I was running I tripped and my phone fell into the water. As you know, I’m still going to school, so I don’t have any pocket change so I couldn’t afford a new one. I was so busy with schoolwork that I didn’t have any time to contact you. Also, everytime I came to your apartment, you weren’t there and the door was locked. Today I finally had free time and thought I would contact you.”
“Katie, I’m so glad you’re safe. My life has been horrible without you, how about we go back to my apartment and catch up a bit?” you ask awkwardly.
As you arrive back at the apartment, you discuss what happened during the time spent apart and start to discuss new strategies to having a more healthy relationship.
Katie reassures you by stating, “Remember. As you are searching for a job, I won’t have a phone, so I won’t be able contact you. I’ll try to be home before 7 PM every night.”
A week goes by. The job search isn’t going well. You got fired from one of the biggest companies in the entire city. Having that on a resume isn’t very reassuring when searching for a new job.
“I wonder what Katie might want for dinner tonight… I guess I’ll just make some spaghetti!” you think to yourself.
You prepare the food and wait at the dinner table. The spaghetti has gone cold.
“What time is it anyways?”
You check your phone. The clock reads 9:23 PM. You start to become worried. The night progresses, no word from Katie. After a few minutes pass, you’re starting to have a panic attack and are left in a depressed state similar to the one that you were in after you had gotten fired.
“Without Katie, I’m nothing. I need to find her!” you say hesitantly.
As you are about to leave the apartment, you get a call.
“Matt! Hurry! It’s Katie! She’s in the hospital! She isn’t looking good, you need to hurry Matt!” a voice that sounded like Jim resounded.
You don’t wonder if it was Jim, how he got your number, or if any of the information is true. You’re only thinking about getting to the hospital, finding Katie and comforting her.
As you barge into the hospital, you can’t feel any of your face. You frantically ask workers where Katie is and rush up to the third floor.
Inside of Katie’s hospital room is Jim and a group of doctors. She’s hooked up to a machine and is barely breathing.
“What happened? What’s going on?” you struggle to ask.
“Around 7:30, Katie crossed the street right outside of the bar, the car wasn’t looking and hit her as she crossed the street. The driver panicked and drove away. The cops are still looking for them.” Jim explained.
You head over to Katie’s bedside. You’re overwhelmed with a ton of emotions and nothing other than “I’m sorry” comes to mind.
You continuously whisper “I’m sorry” into the ears of an unconscious Katie.
The doctor apologizes and informs that the car accident was fatal and that she doesn’t have much longer to live.
“I’m sorry.” you state one final time.
As you say this, the heart monitor flat lines. Tears fall from your face. You planned on proposing after finding a new job. Your dreams are crushed. You have gone emotionless. Jim starts trying to comfort you, but you ignore it. You leave the hospital and take a walk. You are crushed and no longer feel any emotions.
The words “I’ll do anything to stay with Katie. I’ll be able to stay with her forever this way.” echo through your mind as you make your way towards the nearest firearm store.
