Erinyes Game
“I wonder if those Furies ever caught on to the fact that I’m Charon?” You say, maybe a little too loudly. You widen your eyes at Hephaestus, hoping he takes the hint. “It’s been difficult, trying to protect people from death.”
“I imagine it was,” says Hephaestus, playing his part. “But what will you do tonight?”
“Well, I don’t want you to die, so I’ll protect you. I don’t think Hera knows I’m Charon, so if she is a Fury, hopefully she won’t go for me, yeah? And then tomorrow we can work together.”
“Let’s hope so. Thank you for protecting me, Hestia. Have a good night.”
“You too. And I won’t forget our promise.”
After your hastily scripted exchange, you tap Hephaestus’s shoulder. “Please don’t forget to protect me tonight,” you whisper, as quickly as you can. Something in you is terrified, and you pretend that your hand isn’t trembling.
He nods, gently taking your hand off his arm. “Yes. Get some sleep.”
It takes forever for you to fall asleep, and when you do, your dreams are as empty as the night that you first arrived here.
