Erinyes Game

With a cry, you run straight at the Fury, not giving them time to think. Your blades connect almost as if you’re sword fighting, and they push you back a few steps.

You are, of course, not experienced in this kind of combat (or any kind for that matter) but you’re going to do your utmost to win.

The Fury is definitely quite strong, but you’re desperate. You swing your machete erratically, making sure they can’t predict your next moves, as you look for an opening.

Eventually your machete connects with the side of the Fury’s head, stunning them temporarily. It doesn’t draw much blood, but the machete does cut through the strings of the mask the Fury is wearing, ripping it off their face.

You nearly drop the machete in shock. “Aphro—”

She stops you with a slash of her knife, expression kept carefully blank.

“Aphrodite, please, talk to me!” You beg. “Why are we doing this?”

“No choice,” she grunts, parrying your blows.

“But there’s always a choice.”

She smiles sadly. “So naïve, Hestia. But it’s one of the things I really like about you.”

You let down your guard too much, and you hear the knife sink between your ribs before you feel it. Your hands tremble, almost dropping the machete, but before you can drop it Aphrodite takes her free hand to steady yours. She walks forward into your blade, letting it pierce right through her chest.

Your eyes widen. “Aphrodite…why…”

Both of you fall to your knees. Aphrodite’s smile hasn’t changed. “Because this is my choice.”

Hades interrupts your little moment by applauding. “How beautiful,” he says with a sigh. “Truly, thank you both for allowing me to witness such a moment between friends. I will never forget this.”

Something about his tone makes you want to wipe that annoying, fake sentimental expression off his face, but the floor rushes up to meet you before you can do anything about it.

As you lie there next to Aphrodite, you suddenly get an idea. Straining to move your body, you start crawling towards Hades.

“Hestia, it’s all right, just let go,” he tries to soothe you. “Even like this, you’re beautiful. Fighting for your last moments of life…” As always, you ignore him.

Reaching up to the table next to him, you grab the first metal choker you see. It’s shining with red light. Perfect.

With the last bit of strength you have, you lift the choker high above your head.

“Hestia, what are you—”

You don’t let him finish the question. You fling the choker right into the wall of monitors, where it breaks open and bursts into flames.

Hades simply stands there for a moment, shocked, before running into the back room and grabbing an armful of gadgets.

“Well then, I suppose this is goodbye,” he says hurriedly.

Fate seems to have other plans for him. As one, the monitors explode into shards of glass and molten metal, and one of the largest shards of glass shoots towards him, piercing right through his back, poking out of his chest. With a morbid sense of satisfaction, you watch Hades fall.

You crawl back over to Aphrodite and take one of her hands. She offers you a weak smile as you bleed out together. The fire from the monitors continues to spread, making its way down the dark hallway, surely to make its way to the rest of the facility.

You had always found the flickering, dancing flames to be comforting.
