Erinyes Game

Crazy as this game was, you can’t deny that there were moments that made your heart race, not out of fear, but a terrible excitement.

You wanted to feel that again.

With a deep breath, you raise your hand and point at him. “I’ll choose you, Hades. Teach me more about the limits of human emotion.”

His laughter is enthralling with a hint of madness, and you find yourself joining in.

He takes you out of the facility, finally allowing you your freedom. Even as you breathe in the fresh air, the scent of blood is still fresh in your memory. You imagine that you’ll never be able to forget it.

“My beautiful queen of the underworld, my Persephone,” says Hades reverently, brushing his fingertips down your cheek in a deceptively gentle gesture. “What would you like to do at this moment?”

You take a moment to think. “I want you to show me how to set up my own version of the Erinyes Game. I’m thinking I’d like to see just how far trust can go. What do you think of having people pair up, shackled together, and if they separate they’ll die?”

Hades looks happier than you’ve seen him. “Absolutely wonderful. How I‘ve longed for a kindred spirit.”

You take a pomegranate from him, and as you eat, you idly wonder how long it’ll take before you end up throwing him into a death game of your own creation.

Allowing Hades to drag you into his dark world of tormented souls, you feel like maybe you aren’t really Persephone after all. For unlike her, once you tasted the forbidden fruit, you can never be free.
