Your pyruvate molecule enters the mitochondrion and is met by Coenzyme A. This enzyme turns your pyruvate molecule into an Acetyl CoA, removing a CO2 and oxydizing an NADH in the process. As a hydrogen atom, you can go with the NADH or continue with the Acetyl CoA molecule.
