Reach

The unsettling silence makes you stiff as a board, that is until you can’t take it any longer.

“Ari, can you can with me to get a cookie?” You ask.

Ari nods before hopping off her seat, and following you to the line. You bit your lips nervously, not sure how to bring up your worries.

“So um,” You mumble, “I don’t want to sound like I’m some crazy jealous friend that only wants you all to myself, but… I feel like bringing him to study with us so abruptly kinda makes me a little uncomfortable.”

“Honestly, I should have told you before, since it is kinda of our thing, and I’m sorry I didn’t.” Ari shakes her head in understanding, “but after you hang around him more you’ll be more comfortable right? Give him a chance?”

You chuckle, and are grateful she understood your dilemma, it was never easy for you to be around new people.

The both of you head back to the table, and although you still feel rather tense, Ari’s acknowledgement gets you to relax.

Weeks pasa, and you and Ari spend time together as usual and occasionally invite River, easing the friendship process. Everything seems to run smoothly and your worries about River fade away like snow melting from the impending spring.

“He asked me out.” Ari blurts out, as you two are in your dorm studying for exams.

“Wait what?” You say confused.

“It came out of nowhere and I don’t know what to say.” Ari’s troubled voice makes something in your chest tighten.
