In Mesopotamia, Gods were local, worship in city temples
Gods were volatile and seemingly random, like the Tiger & Euphrates
Yahweh was chief God in Israel → worshipped other gods too
Israelites were in captivity → began to view Yahweh as their ONLY true God, as benevolent, transcendent, and personal → helped them through captivity
