Gold Rush Choose Your Own Adventure

The two miners bring you back to your camp for the trial, and you hear them whisper as they bring you along. You strain your ears to hear what they are saying, but by the time you start to make out what they’re saying, you’re at the camp.
‘’Hey, you, stay put or else!’’ one of the miners tells you. They go off into a tent and leave you on a bench-like log. You wait and watch the tent, in case anyone comes out. Minutes pass, and finally you see someone come out of the camp. He eyes you warily, as if you are something very dangerous, and clears his throat.
‘’We’ll be havin’ a trial here, partners. The name’s Buck-eye Bill, and you’ll be the one who’s life’s on the line.’’ he points at you with a gleam in his eye. You tremble slightly, trying not to imagine what Buck-eye Bill might do to you if you’re not proven innocent. ‘’Sit down right here, lad.’’ he gestures to a separate log, but this one has the words “FOR TRIALS AND IMPORTANT STUFF’’ carved into it. You walk over to the log and make yourself comfortable, while Buck-eye Bill calls everyone in camp out of their tents for the trial. ‘’If you’re a witness, come up to the front!’’ he yells over the voices of a dozen men.
‘’Why’d ya call us out here, Buck?!’’ someone from the crowd yells. ‘’Is it another trial? I swear, trials are the only thing ya like!’’ the same person yells.
‘’Listen here, this man has been accused stealin’ some equipment, so we ought ta show him that no one, I repeat, absolutely no one, will steal our things and make a fool of us!’’ a few men cheer, thinking that perhaps Buck-eye Bill’s threat will really stop stealing. He beacons a few witnesses forward, and some go to your post, while others go to the two miners’ post.
‘’I did not steal.’’ you say nervously. You know that’s true, but whether or not the people will believe, you don’t. Buck-eye Bill nods, someone whispers in his ear, and his eyes widen. You prepare for the trial with only a smidge of confidence, and brace yourself.

“Innocent!’’ you hear a familiar voice shout. You jerk your head upwards, and try to process what you think you’ve just heard. You stare blankly, trying to remember what has happened in the past forty minutes. Mostly, they yakked on and on about their opinions and would eventually get off topic, and that’s when Mr. Buck-eye Bill would step in and stop the arguments from becoming full on fights. Someone pats you on the back, and pulls you up. Buck-eye Bill looks you in the eye and nods. He probably noticed you trying to snooze off. He brings you to a small shack covered with leaves and pulls out a shovel and pickaxe. ‘’Listen, ya safe so go and run along, but if ya really did steal ‘em items, keep an eye out for me, ‘cuz I ain’t givin’ up yet. If we do catch the thief though, we’ll be sure to tell ya. ’’ he says, sounding slightly disappointed, and tips his hat with a grin tugging at the corners of his mouth. You shake his hand like it’s the last time you’ll ever shake one, and begin to run to the gold mines, with a big old smile on your face.
