Monster Academy Chronicles

All at once, several alarms went off inside Josh's head, screaming things like "Bad Idea!" and "Don't do It!" He looked up at Kayla and said "Sorry Kayla, but I'm gonna be busy with a science project for Professor Lobe tonight, and it's due at the beginning of the week, so I'm afraid I can't." Kayla's ears drooped slightly in disappointment "Oh. Alright then. Maybe some other time?" Josh forced himself to smile "Maybe." By which he of course meant "Never in a million years."

Kayla scarfed down her meal and bid Josh goodbye before standing up and going about her day. "Why did you have to turn her down like that?" Asked Nancy "You know how I am around her." Said Josh somewhat defensively "Besides, if I’m afraid of just one werewolf, how do you think I'd feel being in a house with a whole pack of them? What does she see in me anyway? I'm nothing special."

"Nancy placed a hand on Josh's shoulder "Hey, come on, don't sell yourself so short. There's plenty of desirable things about you. You're a good person, a great friend, and I'm not saying I'm attracted to you like that, but you are kind of handsome for a human."

Josh smiled "Thanks. Hey, how about we hit the arcade? I bet I could whip you in pool." Nancy smirked " Oh really? Okay, I'll play your game. But if I win, you have to ask Kayla out to the next school dance." Josh's eyes nearly bulged out of their sockets upon hearing that. "What!? Why would you want me to do that?" "Three reasons." Said Nancy with a chuckle "One, I really think you'll be happy with Kayla if you'd just give her a chance. Two, I've known her since second grade, and she's a really nice girl when you get acquainted with her. Three, Just because we're friends, that doesn't mean I don't like to watch you squirm sometimes."

"Fine. But if I win, you have to do my homework for a week." They shook hands, and made their way to the arcade, which was filled with all kinds of games, from Claws of Chaos to various ones imported from Earth. They went to a billiards table in the corner of the room, and began their game. To Josh's surprise, Nancy turned out to be quite good. "Where did you learn to shoot like that?" He asked after Nancy had performed several trick-shots. She giggled "Let's just say I have other talents besides being number one on the track team."

After about twenty minutes had passed, Nancy finished by knocking the eight-ball into the corner pocket, winning the game. "Josh grumbled. "Come on, don't be a sore loser now." Said Nancy "It's not the fact that I lost, it's that I have to ask Kayla out to a dance now." Nancy patted Josh on the back "Come on now, it won't be so bad. Like I said, Kayla's a really nice girl when you get to know her. You just need to give her a chance."

"Okay, fine." Said Josh, sighing in defeat "Just don't tell her I had to ask her out because I lost a bet, or else she might not be so happy." Nancy smiled "Wouldn't dream of it, buddy." The two of them went back to the Academy, and afterward went their separate ways for the day. Later that evening, after having had dinner, Josh ran into his roommate, Todd Sciera, the Cyclops, who apart from the giant eyeball that took up the majority of space on his forehead, looked almost human. He wore a denim jacket and jeans with white and red sneakers, and had his hair in a crew-cut style.

You could say that he and Josh were sort of friends, as they usually got along well enough, despite the fact they had very little in common. “Hey Josh, is something wrong? You look kind of glum.” Todd asked “Let’s just say that today wasn’t exactly my luckiest of days.” Josh replied as he prepared for bed. “How so?” Said Todd “Don’t worry about it.” That night, Josh dreampt that he had followed through with his obligation to ask Kayla out to the dance. Things were going rather well, at first. Josh was slow-dancing with Kayla, until he accidentally stepped on the hem of her dress, causing it to rip off and leave her standing in the middle of the gym in her underwear, while everybody pointed and laughed. Josh tried to apologize, but Kayla was so furious that she grabbed him and threw him into a giant meat grinder that appeared from nowhere.

Josh awoke with a start, his bed soaked with a cold sweat, and his heart racing from the nightmare he just had. It took him several moments to calm down, after which he told himself that there would most likely be no giant meat grinder at the dance, and that he should probably watch his steps when he was dancing with Kayla, just to be sure.
