Gold Rush Choose Your Own Adventure

You decide to go on a ship. This particular one doesn’t seem to be in good condition. The mast creaks and the ship looks like it just barely survived a terrible storm. The sails look ripped up, in no condition for sailing. The wood looks suspicious, and you press your hand against the ship. Just like you thought, the wood is cold and damp. One plank falls in front of your feet, and you jump back, startled. You pick it up and examine it. You bend it and sigh. ‘’Are you guys sure this is safe?’’ you ask your crew. They nod.
‘’We know it looks dangerous, but it’ll work just fine.’’ someone says. You’re nervous when you climb aboard, but there is no turning back now. The ship creaks under the weight of you and the crew. You take cautious steps and go to your post. The crew cuts the ropes that keep the ship from floating away. For a moment you are silent, scared that something terrible will happen. Nothing does. A wide smile spreads across your face, and you finally start to relax. Suddenly, you feel something tickling your leg. You gasp, and notice that there are leaks starting to sprout up all around the boat. The crew hurriedly tries to patch up the leaks, but is struggling without your help.
‘’Everyone! Attention! We have a situation, as you may have noticed! Leaks are everywhere, so help patch up the boat!’’ your captain shouts. You grab some materials and start to try and patch up the leak closest to you. You put a plank of wood down on a leak and start to hammer down. Someone yells your name and you turn around.
‘’Hey, hand me that hammer!’’ he shouts. You’re baffled. He wants you to give him your hammer? You shake your head and get back to work, when you see a hammer next to you. You grab it with your free hand, and gingerly hand it to your crew member. ‘’Thanks!’’ he shouts. You start to hammer again, and feel a sharp pain in your left thumb. You look down and start to feel weak. Your thumb is beginning to bleed and you rifle through your bag for something that may help. You spot something, and reach for it. It’s a piece of clothing, and you wrap it around your thumb. It stops the bleeding, but you have bigger problems now. The boat slowly starts swelling with water.
‘’You said this boat was safe!’’ you scream at your crew members. ‘’Now we’re stuck at sea, with a boat that can’t float!’’ the water is pouring in now, and there seems to be nowhere to go. Your crew members panic, and they begin to jump overboard.
By now, the ship has sunken. You throw your arms about, looking for something to hold onto. There are no lifeboats, so you can’t get onto one. Your mother and father had always tried to teach you to swim, but you refused to learn. That skill could have come in handy, but all you can do now is regret it. Weakly, you shout, ‘’Help.’’ But it is no use. No one can hear you and you begin to sink into the murky depths of the ocean. You see sunlight shining above you. Thinking of your fondest memories of your parents, you close your eyes for the last time, and drift into a slumber you shall never awaken from.
