“SLAVE 4! GET HERE AT ONCE!”
Lavender sighed and put the half-clean dishes in the sink. She dried her soapy-water-sopped hands and rushed to Madame Topaz’s room. She was lying on her six-poster bed, scoffing a box of red wine chocolates.
“Yes, Madame?” Lavender asked, bowing as low as she could (she couldn’t touch the ground because her legs were too long).
“Did you buy the milk?” she asked.
“You didn’t give me the money, Madame,” Lavender explained. “You gave it to Copper because she’s more efficient.”
“So I did,” Madame Topaz grunted. “Get out, then.”
Lavender fled from the room.
On her way back to the kitchen she nearly bumped into her step-sister, Raven/Gardener/Slave 5. She was rushing to down stairs with a tray of gardening tools.
“Hi Raven,” Lavender said.
“Hey,” Raven replied.
Lavender soon arrived back at the kitchen. She leant on the countertop and sighed. Now she had lived nearly 11 years at Topaz Mansion. She looked out of the window and saw dark trees and a light blue sky, with fluffy clouds. A golden late-afternoon sun was glowing through the thick glass, sending warmth onto Lavender's face.
She started washing a dirty golden goblet. The clock on the wall read ‘6:38’. At 6:45 Reed would be taking over her dish-washing job. Lavender took a plate of chicken bones and ate one, Madame Topaz was going on a ‘I-like-chicken’ spree so lots of chicken bones to suck on. Copper came inside with the milk, and Lavender offered her a chicken bone, she took the plate and cracked them open, put the liquid in a five mugs, added salt, pepper and milk. Copper put the mugs in the microwave.
Lavender sat down on the floor in the sun and took out a notebook and blunt pencil. She started drawing a rough circle, then added more details. Soon she had drawn a huge, majestic wolf with smoke and flames coming from it’s paws and eyes. She thought for a moment for a name, and then wrote ‘Pyroc’ next to it. She gazed at it, the sun seemed to be glinting off the fire.
Then she drew a baby Lavender, Raven, Copper, Elm and Reed. They were wearing fancy silk clothes, Lavender→ red, orange and yellow, Raven→ green and brown, Copper→ blue and white, Elm → blue and aqua, and Reed→ black and red.
“Lavender?”
The sun dipped below the trees, and the room went darker. Lavender looked up to see Reed standing in the doorway.
“Have you been drawing again?” Reed said, but she was smiling.
“Oh, uh…”
Reed looked at the notepad, but Lavender held it to her chest protectively.
Reed laughed and started drying the dishes that Lavender had left there.
“Your dinner’s in your room,” Reed said.
“Thanks, Reed.” Lavender stood up and slipped the notebook in her pocket. She was soon in her room. On her bedside table was a small stale slice of mouldy chicken. Lavender bit into it and chewed it, she spat it out because it was too tough, so she had the slice of brown stale bread and the mug of warm chicken bone liquid.
