In 1951, DuBois was persecuted by the federal government under the accusation of being a Communist (due to his belief that capitalism was the cause of racism), but the case was later dropped. However, the unpleasant situation actually led to his will to join the Communist Party, renounce his American citizenship, and move to Ghana, where he died in 1963 on the day before MLK’s “I Have a Dream Speech.”
