Middle Ages

The Serfs worked for the higher classes such as the, Merchants, Nobles, and Knights.
They had no rights but were protected by the upper classes they worked for the land but not the lord, and had a easier life than peasants, consisting of food that they made (meat only in winter) the owner of the serfs were nothing without them, and because of that the serfs master would treat them to meat and other goods.

A monk remains a monk for the rest of his life. You weren't allowed to talk but a couple hours a day & you could only eat meat if you were sick. They shave their head and wear orange ropes. They act like monks when they don't have to protect anything. Their the most disciplined people on the land.

Medicine was basic and Middle Ages doctors had limited knowledge. Medieval doctors had no idea what caused the terrible illnesses and diseases which plagued the Middle Ages. The Middle Ages was devastated by the Black Death in England (1348-1350) which killed nearly one third of the population of England. The Middle Ages doctors were helpless. The underlying cause of many of the illnesses was due to the lack of sanitation. but Middle Ages doctors did not make this link until after the outbreak of the Black Death. The Middle Ages doctors had no idea what caused the Black Death.

The Merchants could sometimes be richer than the King, if the Merchant collected high value items to trade with he could have his workers make into furniture, clothing or even food. The Merchant’s job was to trade goods from all over so he could provide for the town, by doing so he became rich and he could hire workers to produce other goods to sell.

A king ruled large areas of land. To protect his land from invasion, the king gave parts of it to local lords, who were called vassals. In return, his vassals promised to fight to defend the king's land.

Knights were warriors who fought on horseback. In return for land, they pledged themselves as vassals to the king. Only the sons of lords could become knights. Candidates for knighthood began training as pages at the age of 7, learning social graces and skills such as fencing and hunting. At 13 or 14 they became squires and began to practice fighting on horseback. Squires served as assistants to knights both in the castle and on the battlefield. At 21 a squire could become a knight himself, kneeling before the lord of the manor to be "dubbed" on the shoulder with a sword. Kings, local lords, and knights were all part-of a ruling class that called itself noblemen.

Vassals ruled lands granted to them by their king. Those lands were called fiefs. Within a fiefs, a vassal (Noble) acted as a local lord and could give portions of it to vassals of his own. Someone might be the vassal of one person, but the lord of another.

For peasants, life was hard. They worked long hours every day just to ensure that their family had a roof over their head and food to eat. If your parents were peasants, you probably would be a peasant as well. Most of the peasants were farmers, but some were tradesmen, such as millers or tavern owners, they were kinda like serfs but could vote not that the king would listen to them.Peasants generally lived off the land. Their diet basically consisted of bread, porridge, vegetables and some meat. The main crops were corn, wheat and beans. Near their homes, peasants had little gardens that contained lettuce, carrots, radishes, tomatoes, beets and other vegetables. They also might have fruit and nut trees. If the peasant was wealthy enough to have cows or goats, the family would have cheese and milk. Many peasants died when the weather was too wet or too dry. If their crops didn't grow, they didn’t have food to eat.
