The Star of Egypt

"You said you quit journalism for 'personal reasons,'" you say. "What personal reasons?"

"Look." Matthew's face grows serious as he narrows his eyes at you. "It's really none of your business."

"Mr. Winston, please," you plead with your best "pretty girl" eyes. "It could be very important that I know."

Matthew sighs.

"Alright, fine." He turns away from you as he continues talking. "I was a journalist, a very prodigious one, too, I might add. I was on my way to working for the big shots - I was going places.

"And then Dmitry Knight - yeah, your husband, Dmitry - snagged a big story. I mean, this story was huge. He exposed some corruption in the local government. Big deal, won awards, all that jazz. Dmitry went on to work for the New York Times.

"And what did that leave me?" Matthew pauses as he turns back to look at you. "This dinky little place. So, yeah, I quit journalism. Couldn't deal with the shame really."

"I'm sorry to hear that, Mr. Winston," you console.

"Nah, don't worry about it." Matthew tries a smile. "It's ancient history now. Anything else I can do for you, Mrs. Knight?"
