"No," you smile, "I'm just kidding you."

Mary suddenly smiles a dazzling smile. "Oh." She breathes a sigh of relief. "Mother Bertha would have been mad."

"Would she have spanked you?" you ask, feeling a bit more forward and blunt than usual.

Mary blushes and looks away. "Probably. She doesn't understand little mistakes like this."

You shrug. "No harm done."

"Thanks." She smiles again and hugs you impulsively.
