Secrets of the Night

There was a naked child in her arms, and they were both laying under a tree branch. Brenna looked around and sat up. Her yard was full of naked bodies most of them adults. She stood up looking behind her for the house she knew SHOULD have been there. It was gone and in its place lay a pile of charred and splintered wood. Maizie was walking toward her, she looked old and Brenna wondered if it was just the sunlight that made the woman's hair seem greyer than it had the night before. As Brenna stood up, the little boy beside her stirred and turned to look at her with too brown eyes.

"You aren't one of us," he said looking at the other naked figures prone along the grass. If the house had still been standing she would have offered towels and blankets. As it was she had nothing to offer. Walking to Jason's car she pulled out an oversized sweatshirt. The ivyleague college name fell to his midsection. He was a small boy, but it covered him at least.

"Harvey!" a young man about Lily and Evan's age came running toward them naked- but seemingly unaware of his nudity. He didn't acknowledge Brenna as he knelt beside the younger boy. They could have been age-enhanced clones. She assumed that they were brothers. "I was so worried when I woke up and didn't see you. What happened? I saw you go into the houseĀ…"

The young Harvey took a step closer to Brenna and wrapped his arm around her. There was another man walking toward them fully clothed. She recognized him a moment too late as the FBI agent.

"Well, well, what have we here?" he sneered.

Brenna instinctively tightened her arm around the child. He shivered and she didn't think it was from the cold.

"These boys were meant to be in my custody I believe." The agent snarled, he looked around at all the bodies prone on the lawn. "In fact, I believe I could use most of these things in my research."

Brenna saw a young man she hadn't seen in human form the night before. He stood up and smiled at her- a sexy smile-a smile that men give women when they are about to show off. Brenna saw him walk jauntily a few feet toward her then bend down. Fur replaced his skin, and soon he was running toward them on all fours. Brenna lifted the little boy and pushed him behind her even though he was probably more capable of fending off the coming prey than she was. The wolf didn't go for Brenna though, or the boy. The wolf attacked the finely tailored pant leg of the agent. A trickle of blood ran down his leg, staining the delicate fibers and causing the man to scream in pain and some deeper anguish.
