Secrets of the Night

"Do you have any sage?" Lily asks as she begins to tear through Brenna's newly organized cabinets.

"Evan," Brenna whispers hoping he'll find it since her eyes are fixated on the mass of figures drawing closer to her house.

"They can't come in without an invitation, and the sale line will judge who is fit to enter." Evan reassured her patting her shoulder as he rushed to help Lily.

"Evan, there are…" Brenna felt sick, she had been ok with the whole boyfriend becoming a werewolf bit- actually she hadn't really believed it. She had been ok with the strange people coming by her house that had been fine. As she watched the figures floating nearer, she felt her stomach begin to revolt.

"Breathe," William said from beside her. "Everything will be ok, just breathe. Cheer up, most girls your age aren't faced with their destiny so soon."

Brenna's head was jammed between her legs and she was studying the pattern of the linoleum. Destiny? She thought the word, in fact it screamed inside her head. She realized a moment later that she should have said it out loud. "DESTINY?"

Lily walked over with a bowl and a candle and lit the sage on the kitchen table- "We're here to help you, we'll keep the baddies away."

Brenna looked out the back door, and saw that the figures had nearly made the distance across the field. Her stomach rolled violently- threateningly. Her head was again pushed down between her legs.

"Do you have any crosses?" Lily's cheerleader-esque voice was beginning to grate on Brenna's nerves. She gritted her teeth and fought back bile.

"Oh god no." the voice was Williams, and it held all of the pain and suffering and worry of the world in it. "They came un-beckoned."

Brenna stood up and looked out the window, the figures had stopped moving toward her house, and stood lined up facing a new set of figures. There was a moment of still assessment, and then as if two worlds were smashing together, both bodies of beings moved at once.

"I have to go out there," William said struggling to untangle himself with a dining room chair.

The back yard had come a horror movie and now it was complete as blood and chunkier bits flew in all directions. Brenna should have thrown up, but as she watched she felt separated from the scene.

"This is a bad time for there to be blood on the grounds." Lily whispered.

Brenna watched frozen as William stepped toward the door and opened it to let himself out. His figure changed as soon as he was past the last step. His body began to morph, ripping his clothes apart. Some kind of mucus looking substance dripped heavily to the ground. His body was covered in fur mere moments later.

Brenna gazed at him for a moment and then looked at Lily, the girl was sitting on a counter stool swinging her leg and drinking tea. Evan repaired the line of salt and then sat down to watch as well. Like those sick children people read about that only watch gruesome shows the teenagers were watching the war unfold with rapt attention.

"It's the house that's drawing them," Lily predicted. "There's always been something about this place…"

Brenna looked at her grandmother's ordinary house so strong to her, so normal and consistent. The house was not the cause it had something to do with her. She could feel it in her bones all they way to the tips of her toes. The house was not the problem it was Brenna that was the problem.
