Secrets of the Night

The trio spent most of their post-dinner time cleaning the living room. They were halfway through when a sound ripped through the stillness of the night. It was the kind of sound that tickles down the spine and back up making all the hairs on a body's arm stand on end. Brenna shivered and looked out the window. Night had fallen, but the fat moon was offering dark shadows.

"Perhaps you should head home Evan, before it gets much later." Jason suggested quietly, and Brenna wondered if he had felt the same ominous pang she had.

"Don't send him out there. Would you like to call your dad?" Brenna asked reaching for the phone. "Tell him you are spending the night."

"He won't be home now," Evan said shortly and gazed out the window nervously.

Brenna went through the house with Jason's help and closed all the curtains. Evan meanwhile continued cleaning. Jason wanted to stop and set up his NES, since he had a man to play with for the night. Brenna watched him try to match new fangled plugs to old fangled holes. In the end the boys opted for a game of chess. Manly chess- but still chess. Meanwhile Brenna continued removing dust from the ivory keys of her grandmother's prized piano. She hit a note testing to see if it would play. An odd note struck. Brenna opened the top and removed a long shotgun already loaded.

"Jeez girl, whatcha gonna do with that?" Jason asked.

"Odd place for a gun," Brenna said as she set to taking it apart and cleaning the parts.

"You know what to do with that thing?" Jason skeptically enquired concern marring his Calvin Klein features.

"Yes, I do." Brenna boasted. "You could learn a thing or two from us country girls."
