Secrets of the Night

Brenna wasn't really sure she wanted to go play with her imaginary friend of old. She was still trying to decide when the room around her shifted. Everything changed in an instant and they were in a field. It was a field full of fresh flowers and the aroma was sweeter than anything she had ever caught the whiff of. The grasses grew high, so tall in fact that Auberon quickly vanished into the depths. She could hear giddy childish laughter in the distance.

Looking down, she saw that she was wearing a pair of silk pajamas with her initials monogrammed on the pocket. She had bought them last week at Macy's. They would have been too big for the child version of herself. She dismissed this detail when she heard her name called again in the distance.

"Brenna, bo-benna, ti aliga fenna, ti legged, ti legged bowlegged Brenna!!!" the boy's voice called teasingly.

Brenna found herself chuckling slightly at the old mockery. Her legs had always been fine as a dancers she wasn't even slightly bowlegged. Her eyes scanned the grass for movement, and she saw it in the distance moving toward a great tree. The tree in the middle of the field was huge and lovely, with draping willow branches that danced in the breeze. Brenna started to move forward dismissing the oddness of the things happening around her. Besides, she'd never find out anything standing by herself.

"Auberon," she called walking through the grass. As she walked, she felt as if she were transforming. She felt the long forgotten pains of growth. Her cheery beckoning turned to a cry of panic. Never before in this world had she felt genuine pain. "AUBERON!"

The boy's face appeared above her, looking down at her with concern. "Brenna, what's happened?"
