Hall of Infinite Doors
Dinner began and the family shared stories with him. They shared stories that surprised him, stories about family history, stories about hunting, stories about farming. The stories seemed endless, as every story reminded a family member of another story. Every story had its own interesting twists, and he was entertained the entire dinner.
Once, the little boy had asked John for a story, so John told him the story about the time he had chased ducks in the park along with the little kids. This peaked the family's interest in him, so he ended up recounting the tale of how he was brought to fortune. He realized how very lucky he was to be in the situation at hand. He ended the story with his promise to himself to always do what he was told to do like he should have in school after he joined college.
The farmer excused himself from the table after dinner was complete, and dessert started being dished out. It was an abrupt exit, and John was frightened he might have accidentally said something to offend the old man.
Instead, the old man came back quickly, "I knew I had one of these somewhere", he announced.
It was an old guitar like John used to use to get money of the streets. He knew immediately what was expected of him, so he reached for the guitar, and gently caressed it. He experimented at first, and finally got it tuned correctly. He apologized before he performed, "I haven't done this in a long time, so bear with me and I'll try if I can make this instrument sing for you."
Having long forgotten his genius Spam Jam, he sang a few more modern songs with intermediate skill. His fingers seemed to remember the instrument much better than he did. It took several tries for him to get through each song, but the family did not seem to mind. In fact, the family laughed and clapped for him after every song. As a prize for his performance, John was presented with a song the farmer played on the guitar. While it had no lyrics, the song was well put together and gentle on the ears.
Time seemed at a standstill during the song, but after it was finished, it was very evident it was late out because it was so dark outside, and the 8 year old was laying with his eyes closed in his mother's lap. The 11 year old yawned and was scooted up into her room swiftly. The 8 year old had to be carried up to his room.
