Hall of Infinite Doors
"We have leftovers tonight. I know you are probably used to something more extravagant, but this is all we have. We will have dessert today, in your honor.", The farmer informed him. "They've been in the house preparing dinner, so it should be finished any minute now."
John only smiled. He received a weird vibe when they opened the house door, like there was a scent that shouldn't have matched the scene. When the door closed behind him, however, he forgot the feeling completely, and took off his dirty shoes like the farmer did in front of him.
"It's this way to the kitchen", the old farmer informed him, jerking his head towards a room with voices coming from it. "I have a few more things to do outside, but I'll be back in after a bit." He took John's nod of the head as an acknowledgment.
John stepped into the kitchen with his socks on and was enamored with the aroma. He smelled so many things. Some of the things he smelled he couldn't even identify. Looking forward to the meal, he sat down swiftly and put the napkin in his lap.
The farmer's wife and children came into the room simultaneously. They were all wearing similar, but plain, clothing. They almost looked as if they had taken clothes from the store he used to live next to. He smiled at the prospect. He planned on donating to the store when he got into town to repay for all the free clothes he had taken. He did not plan on giving the buffet any money however. What he had done with there food was perfectly okay. They had been throwing the food out.
"It's nice to see someone stop by", the farmer's wife said, "we haven't had a visitor in many years. He was a very respectable young man, and ran into the same problem you did. It's almost silly how much you two have in common."
"I hope to leave the same impression", John smiled. These people were very friendly. He would not disappoint them, he thought. He might even leave some money for them in case they needed it. He thought he'd stop by here on his way back home just to say hello, or get their address and send them a letter.
