Much of Nothing
You swim for the rock in the middle of the river, the current asisting your effort by pushing you along towards it. Your body hits the side of the stone and knocks the wind from you. Fortunately instinct takes over and you grab hold of the rock and pull yourself onto it.
You lay down atop the rock, your back resting on it's hard surface. You look up at the sky with relief. You have survived.
After relaxing for a while you sit up and look around. You groan inwardly. You are safe for the moment, but you are now stranded in the middle of the river.
You look to the shore and wonder where Terri and Dan have gone, if they have left you or not. You don't see them and can do little more than pray that they have gone for help and not left you stranded in the center of the river to die atop a rock.
Time passes. How long, you are not sure. It's long enough that you have urinated over the side of the rock twice, if that's any indication.
You look to the shore and are again disappointed, though not surprised, to see no one there. You look up to the sky in frustration before turning around and turning your gaze upstream. Upstream, headed towards you are two guys in a river raft.
You jump up and down, waving your arms and almost falling into the river. One of them waves back, indicating that he sees you. At last, salvation has come. There is a chance you will survive this. Thank God for river rafts and the people who use them, you think as the raft draws nearer.
The raft bumps into the rock and the first guy waves for you to get in. Wasting no time you step on the inflated raft and fall face first between the two. They paddle down the river until they reach a nearby shore, where they pull it out of the water.
"Here, help us carry this back," One of them tells you.
"Sure," You say. "Thank you for coming."
"Thank your freinds," The other guy says, "If it weren't for them we wouldn't have even known someone was stuck out there."
The second guy picks the raft up with you while the first guy holds carries the paddles.
"You're lucky you got to that rock," One of them says, "There was a big ass waterfall coming up not too much farther down stream."
"You smoke?" One of the guys asks you.
"Smoke what?" You ask in return.
They laugh a little at this before the one who asked you clarifies vaguely; "You know... Smoke..."
"Yeah," You tell them, asuming that the vagueness can only mean that they are talking abot herb.
"Good," The other guy says, "We'll smoke you up when we get out of these damn woods."
"You are doubly my saviors," You jest.
The rest of the walk back is pretty much silent. You briefly pause the journey to show them the steep hill you rolled down before falling into the river. They laugh at your clumsiness and the walk soon resumes.
When you walk out of the forest you see Terri and Dan leaning up against the car. You help the guys put the raft atop their car, which is parked directly beside Terri's.
"We found him," the lead guy tells your freinds.
"Thank you," Terri offers.
"Sure," the guy replies, "We're gonna smoke him up and then bring him back."
Dan suddenly perks up. "You guys are gonna smoke up? I can definately help you with that."
"Yeah," Terri says, "Just put him in the back. He'll make sure you don't fishtail or anything."
"Fuck you," Dan says to her.
The two guys who saved you look at one another. "Sure," one of them says, "Hop in. Eric will roll one up while I drive."
He unlocks the doors and everyone piles into the car, Eric and the other guy up front while you, Dan, and Terri get in the back.
You ride around with them as the joint gets passed around the car and a thick cloud of smoke floats around your heads. You all laugh when Eric refers to it as a car bong.
Eventually you return to the parking lot and the guys let you and your freinds out. You thank them again for saving your life and reach for the front passenger door.
"Shotgun!" Dan calls out.
Damn it, you curse inwardly, I never get shotgun.
"Let him have shotgun, Dan. He almost died," Terri orders.
"You've got to be kidding me," Dan says incredulously; "He gets to sit up front because he's clumsy!?"
"Just shut up and get in the back," she says.
Grumbling, Dan complies and climbs into the back. You get into the front passenger seat and lean the chair back a little while Terri starts the car. Ah the luxury of reclining the seat, you think as Dan squirms uncomfortably behind you.
As Terri pulls the car out of the parking spot, she asks you about the fall. You can tell at this point that the ride home will be a long one.
