While you were trying to pry the gem out, the girl being sacrificed sees you and lets loose a hopeful cry for you to save her. This causes the Lizards to turn around and look up. The Shaman let's fly a stream of fire from his staff at you, it doesn't hit you, but it does cause you to slip and fall off the statue.

It may be of some comfort to know that you broke your neck in the fall, thus sparing you from gruesome sacrifice the Lizard men would've had in store for you if you had still been alive. Doesn't stop them from eating you though.
