The police were admirable in trying to help the boys, but they couldn't even get in. Every window and door was blocked by its sludge, and no matter what they did it wouldn't budge. They had no chance to get in, so the boys struggled alone. Alone with it. The beast so hideous it is only outshined by the terror and pain it inflicts on its victims. Trust me, the cops were lucky they couldn't get in.
