I decide to stay with Jesse and talk to the police with him. It'd be nice for the cops to have another witness to this case.
It was getting dark out, and Jesse was still on the phone with the cops. I sat back onto my heels and looked at the sky. There were about 23 stars I could see at the moment. Now 24. Now 25. Now 26- wait, no, that's Venus. No, that's not. No, that's NOT Venus. Yes, that's Venus. Okay, now I see 24 stars. Now I see 25 stars. Now I see 24 stars. Now I see 24 stars. At that moment, Jesse had finished calling the cops and hung up.
"The police are on their way." Jesse says, sitting down next to me. I nod, still staring at the stars.
"Is there anything you want to tell them about what happened?" He asks. I shake my head. He asks why. I tell him I don't know what happened.
He sighs, and says, "Fuck man. I don't even know. First the kid drowning in the lake, and now this? Why do things like this happen?"
I look at him. He looked both angry and scared.
I shrug "I'd really hate to send Rex and Priyan back home after the long drive they had to go through to get here."
"They're not going home." Jesse says, "This can still work."
My eyebrows raise in suprise. Is he really still confident about this week?
"We can still make the rest of this week fun for all of us."
Jesse seemed to be determined to make this week work no matter what happens.
"How?" I ask
"We'll all go hiking tomorrow, just the four of us."
I can see why Jesse wants everything to work out. It's been so long since we've seen Rex and Priyan, and most the memories we've had with them have been happy, making him long for the good old times.
The police then came by and we explained what happened. How we were coming back from Southwest Adventures, and we found a crashed car in a ditch off the road, and how we thought the cause of death was suicide. The cops walked over to the car, and told us they'd let us know in the morning.
We got in Jesse's truck and he drove me back to my house. I walked inside, and went straight to my room. I felt like I should do something to help, but I wasn't sure what. I did know one thing, though.
