You step outside and shove your phone into your pocket. As you make your way down the porch steps to your car. The look of panicked people’s faces rushing their families into cars stops you in your tracks. The sounds of small children crying in fear reminding you of why you decided to never have children of your own. You look across the road at the strange trees that used to be big and beautiful when you first moved in. Do they look this way from malnutrition, being scorched, or from being water bogged? You’re not sure, but either way, they’re strange.
You live on a dying planet. Where are you even going to go? The earth is dying, crops are dying, there’s no fish left in the sea. Is there any land left that has been unaffected by disaster? All you know is that it’s no longer safe where you live. You need to try and find somewhere safe. But at what point do you just give up?
Your young neighbor Jimmy sees you paused by your car. You have got to stop reminiscing and learn to take action. “Hey! Do you want to ride with me” he yells out, already halfway into his smart car. You look at your old shitbox and wonder how far it will really get you.
Will you be able to get fuel? Will your car go fast enough? You have never trusted smart cars, but maybe you should take a chance on it. It will be powered by the sun, and maybe it will know the safest route to take. Perhaps it could even take you somewhere unaffected? You would also have company, but you will be giving up control. What should you do?
