Ghost Pirates of the Sea-erra Madre
You decide you can't possibly cut off your own arm and over the next several minutes your body is slowly drawn inside the glowing cube.
Finally your head goes inside the cube and you lose consciousness.
Some time later you wake up and find yourself in softly glowing space. You reach out and realize you can touch nearby walls. The walls are somewhat solid, but you're able to push through. You pull yourself out and discover yourself surrounded by merfolk! Their top halves are human and their bottom halves look like fish, octopus, and other sea creatures. Upon seeing you emerge from the cube one of them blows a long, low note on a strangely shaped shell. You're too overwhelmed to consider how it makes a noise underwater.
"Help!" you scream.
"Hey, it's okay," says one of the merfolk. "It's cool. You've just been reborn, it's understandable that things would seem a little strange."
Reborn? What does this person mean. You look down at your hands and realize that you're not wearing your sea-suit anymore. How are you even breathing? You look down and see that your hands are webbed and your legs have been replaced by a merfolk tail that looks like a blow/puffer fish!
"Aaaaahhhhhhh!" you scream in terror.
Over the new few days you learn about the merfolk. It turns out that several of them had also been turned into merfolk by similar cubes, while others are the descendants of people who'd gone through similar transformations.
Eventually you ask them if you can become a human again.
"I'm sorry," says Nerita, a mermaid, "but you can never return to the world of the surface dwellers."
Upon seeing your confusion Marlow, a person with octopus legs, clarifies by saying "She means humans."
Realizing that your life has changed forever, you're not sure what to do. Marlow suggest you could get a job in their underwater city while Nerita says you could join her in exploring the ocean floor.
