Whilst you may still be able to feed using a long and thin snout, it would result in having a much more limited variety of food. If small insects became unavailable in the environment, a long and thin snout would not be able to harness the strength required to break the outer shells of crustaceans, hence, you would die and your alleles would not be passes on.
