/Summary:

"Shepard was born and raised on Mindoir, a small border colony in the Attican Traverse. When Shepard were sixteen, Batarian slavers raided Mindoir, slaughtering his family and friends. Shepard was saved by a passing Alliance patrol, and enlisted with the military a few years later.

During the Skyllian Blitz (2176?), Shepard showed exceptional bravery. When Batarians attacked Elysium, Shepard and Alliance forces took some time to arrive. Shepard's captain noted that upon identifying the enemy, Shepard was greatly insistent that they immediately breach and board one of the Batarian carriers. Upon inquiry, Shepard explained he was familiar with this enemy and that the shuttles moving away and towards the carrier were transporting humans from Elysium for use in the Batarian slave trade. Shepard exclaimed that if they did not extract the humans from the Batarian cargo hold, they would be brutally tortured as part of their grooming to become slaves. Normally, Alliance Command would not authorize such a risky operation, but the Alliance had been working on prototype breaching vessels coined "ringworms" and had been itching to test them. Shepard was also being considered for Alliance N7 program, so the Alliance decided this operation was the best opportunity to test both the prototype and Shepard. Shepard and 5 N7 troops were ordered to board 3 prototypes and launched towards the Batarian carrier with 3 Alliance fighters as escorts. The "ringworms" were named as such due to their long, cylindrical shape and ribbed texture. Four long teeth extended from entrance hatch of the vessel. The teeth grouped together to form a spearhead shape to allow for the penetration of the thick metal. Shepard and his team successfully breached the carrier's cargo hold and the worm's teeth fanned out upon entering the vessels, allowing the soldiers to pour out of the worm through a hatch behind the teeth. The worm generated a small force field around the punctured hull to prevent air from escaping while Shepard and the N7 soldiers quickly formed a perimeter. Battling through a minor contingent of Batarian resistance, Shepard and the team worked their way towards a line of jail cells that housed a two dozen humans as well as a handful of alien races. Each worm could house about 10 bodies, so Shepard and the team didn't hesitate to free all of the prisoners and escort them towards their escape. Upon extraction, one of the worm's reverse thrusters malfunctioned, causing it to explode almost immediately. The other two worms made their daring escape back to the Alliance fleet, successfully boarding with friendlies. Shepard's actions saved 18 humans, 3 salarians, and a drell from a life of servitude under Batarians. Shepard was awarded the Silver Star for his courageous actions and after proving himself as a worthy candidate to become an N7, Shepard was also nominated and accepted into the program.

On the year ????, Shepard and a small unit of N7 soldiers were sent on a mission to resupply the colonists of Akuze while covertly being truly sent to investigate after the colony went dark. Normally, this would have been a job for the Alliance Navy's Colonial Manifest branch (ANCM), but Akuze was a valuable asset to Alliance interests given that it REDACTED. After landing and making contact with the Alliance, Shepard's team were ordered to go radio silent for the next three days to avoid detection by suspected unknown alien assailants. This proved to nearly be Shepard's undoing, as soon after making contact, they were attacked by a rogue thresher maw. The offspring of these creatures are known to be able to transit through space to other planets via spores, but the long life-span of these creatures makes that a seldom occurrence, which is why Akuze was assumed to be free of such a vicious threat. Shepard's team were hunted down by the maw, losing one of their team before even being able to counterattack. However, the team was well trained and swiftly responded with their heaviest and most destructive weapons, lobbing grenades and biotic attacks at the creature to slow it down. They lured it underneath a nearby tunnel and used the last of their explosives to cause the tunnel ceiling to collapse on the maw, temporarily incapacitating it. The team regrouped to form a plan. With their explosives nearly depleted, the unit was relatively unequipped to handle such a monsterous foe, so Shepard's CO, Sergeant Kozuku, ultimately decided that they would rely on Shepard's trained expertise as an engineer. Shepard would program his drones to assist Corporal Toombs in offering suppressing fire while Sergeant Kozuku would use his biotics to levitate Shepard into the maw's blind spot. As the medic of the team, Toombs had some knowledge of alien anatomy, even being taught weak points of a thresher maw for just such a contingency. If Shepard could reach the edge of the edge armor plating right above mouth of the maw, he could use his omni-blade to stab under the plating and attack a vital bundle of nerves. Unfortunately, while Shepard was being raised into position, the thresher maw attacked Corporal Toombs with its long tongue and swallowed him whole. Growing desperate, Kozuku overloaded his biotics to rapidly thrust Shepard above the maw. Realizing he miscalculate, Kozuku quickly seized his sidearm and rushed towards the maw, firing wildly to get the maw to turn at the right angle so that Shepard's attack might be successful. Shepard descended onto the maw, jabbing his omni-tool into the exposed flesh of the maw's mouth. Shepard grabbed onto the armored plating as an anchor as the maw flung about wildly. Stabbing under the plating and attempting to reach the hidden bundle of nerves only caused the creature to flail even more, tossing Shepard to the ground. Kozuku hadn't given up, and was still firing helplessly at the maw. Finally gaining its attention, the maw jerked towards Kozuku and stabbed him in its arm-like mandibles. Not yet fatally wounded, Kozuku noticed the now unprotected flesh on top of the maw's head and began firing at the creature's most vulnerable point. Kozuku's attack was effective, since the maw immediately began flailing about even before so than before, uncontrollably spewing acid everywhere nearby. Kozuku being nearest its mouth was bathed in viscous fluid and died in near seconds. Shepard noted he could not risk attempting to retrieve Toombs from the belly of the maw without risking a similar fate to Kozuku. With all communication equipment broken by the battle with the maw, Shepard was forced to avoid other avid predators and live off the land since whatever food remained at the nearby colony was quickly claimed by local wildlife. It was not until early the fourth day of the mission that alliance command suspected something was amiss and they quickly mobilized a larger force to investigate. Two cruisers and company of marines landed on Akuze late into the fourth day of the mission. They quickly found a bruised and dirty Shepard who was rather sick due to some of the local flora he consumed being poisonous. Shepard was immediately shuttled to the cruiser for medical treatment. The marines investigated the colony and confirmed the maw was the cause of the destruction. No survivors were found. A separate N7 unit accompanying the company then inherited Shepard's mission to investigate REDACTED. Shepard was commended for his bravery and awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.

Shepard's life on the colonies unsurprisingly made him exceedingly xenophobic. Human colonists often face much resistant and political harassment from the most influential council races that fear human expansion in the galaxy. As a consequence, it is advised that Shepard not be chosen for joint training or operations that involve other sentient species, has attempting this has proven disastrous in the past. Shepard's willingness to risk his life for his comrades and fellow humans as he did during the Skyllian Blitz is notable, making him a clear ally of humanity. After his experience on Akuze, subordinates of Shepard have noted that he has appeared to demonstrate a more reserved nature than before; but his compassion still shines through when opportunity arises."/
