/Summary:

"With both parents in the military, Shepard spent her childhood on ships and stations as they transferred from posting to posting, never staying in one location for more than a few years. Following in her parents' footsteps, she enlisted at the age of eighteen in the Alliance marines.

During the Skyllian Blitz (2176?), Shepard demonstrated her extreme leadership and impressive piloting skills (likely acquired through her spacer upbringing) when she led three other pilots in their fighters and together they nearly single-handedly crushed the right flank of the Batarian Naval fleet through a daring manevere. The four pilots, equipped with Mass Effect bombs known as "hull busters", dodged cruiser fire and enemy fighter pursuit while making a b-line for one of the Batarian fleet's two carriers. The design of the Batarian cruisers offered two shielded openings to the hangar to allow for more efficient mobility of fighters. This design proved to be a flaw as Shepard's squad timed their attack perfectly to be able to enter the hangar from one side just as the shields guarding the entrance were being lowered to allow the next wave of Batarian fighters to deploy. Upon entering the hangar, Shepard and her wingmen quickly dropped their payload and exited the hangar from the other unshielded opening. The squad was not even a kilometer away from the cruiser before the payload engaged, ripping apart the carrier from the inside-out with oscillating mass effect fields. The carrier's shields quickly fell, allowing Alliance cruisers to dispatch the enemy ship from far range. With half their fighters out of commission and their right flank completely exposed, Batarian forces were quickly overwhelmed and forced to retreat after they lost another two cruisers. Shepard has been criticized due to the perceived riskiness of this maneuver, but she defended himself by explaining how through her history as spacer, she had seen plenty of different ships to speculate that such a maneuver was possible. she went on to say that after inquiring with Alliance Intelligence Branch (AIB) regarding the suspected dimensions of the hangar, she felt confident that not only would a double-sided hangar make the maneuver possible, but the height of the hangar offered just enough space for Alliance fighters to enter the hangar above deploying enemy fighters and come out unscathed. AIB later confirmed that this information had been relayed to Shepard during combat. When further asked why she did not ask for permission from Alliance Command, Shepard replied that she was worried the idea would get 'Shot down' so she made a judgement call. Despite further grilling by Alliance brass, it was undeniable that Shepard's dauntless choice may have been what guaranteed victory space battle of the Skyllian Blitz. Shepard was awarded the Silver Star for her courage. After fully proving her extreme potential, Shepard was also nominated and accepted into the N7 program.

During the insurrection on Eden Prime, Shepard was deployed with her squad of N7 operatives ahead of the Alliance Navy's main force to deescalate the situation. Orders were to assist the loyalists who were holed up in the spaceport. The loyalists saw defence of the spaceport as utterly essential in preventing the rebels from gaining an aerial dominance or attempting to escape the system; however, this proved to be a tactical error on the part of the loyalists, as they had to abandon the militia armory. Shepard led her team of 8 N7 soldiers to rally with the loyalists at the spaceport and provide them with much needed reinforcements. After assessing the situation with loyalists leaders, Shepard learned that the rebels had the spaceport completely surrounded with only narrow alleys preventing the loyalists from being overwhelmed. However, without access to munitions from the armory, it would not be long before the spaceport would be indefensible. Unfortunately, the armory rested upon hill making a frontal push risky. But Shepard realized the rebels' terrain advantage had made them careless, since the majority of their forces were concentrated at the spaceport, leaving the armory undermanned. Understanding that if they could incapacitate the rebel leadership, the untrained insurrectionists would quickly lose direction and surrender to the more organized opposition. With this in mind, Shepard's fortitude and athletic ability shined through when she conducted a surprisingly bold tactic to seize the armory. The loyalists were equipped with blank ammunition while N7 soldiers armed themselves with powerful long range tesla cannons. The tactic commenced with engineers lobbing electro-shock generators at the rebels while simultaneously loyalists fired blanks to prevent a backwards retreat. The shocked rebels were briefly immobilized by the generators only to be completely neutralized electric bolts fired by the tesla cannons. Any rebel still standing and not reeling from the shock was met by the sight of Shepard and two other vanguards charging towards them from the central alley to the spaceport. As the trio charged toward the armory, they fired "archae" rounds at any rebel that got in their way. These rounds upon impact with an object burst into a puff of brown smoke, releasing ravenous bacteria that quickly cause any nearby metallic surface to rapidly rust. With the most of the rebels either completely knocked out or disoriented, the other two N7 vanguards remained near the spaceport to cover Shepard's rear, while Shepard made for the now unobstructed route to the armory. What happened next is unclear. All that is known is that Shepard somehow single handedly dealt with the 10 rebels housed in the armory without having to execute a single opponent. Shepard's own account was rather humble, saying that she simply 'resorted to my N7 training in close quarters combat'. The bruises and broken bones later discovered of the rebels that faced Shepard suggest that whoever trained Shepard in the N7 program deserves a promotion. The Alliance forces lagging behind the N7 forces arrived shortly after to clean up the mess. Shepard's careful handling of the situation that minimized casualties on both sides held incredible foresight in leading towards a peaceful resolution between the rebel and alliance leaders after the insurrection as cooperation with the rebel leaders proved instrumental in quelling the grievances of the resentful residents of Eden Prime. Shepard was commended for her bravery and awarded the Star of Terra the Alliance's highest honor.

Shepard's valor in military service is unquestionable. Being the legacy of her veteran parents and her extremely successful military career has instilled greatly loyalty in Shepard toward the Alliance. Apparently, being a spacer made her avoid personal attachments and her dedication to the alliance has instilled great discipline in Shepard's character, making her a very by the books soldier. This can sometimes make Shepard inflexible, but Shepards ability to lead as demonstrated based on her involvement in the Eden Prime insurrection has instilled incredible loyalty in Shepard's subordinates. Shepard's vast experience in space has made her fairly knowledgeable of other sentient species and the Alliance has relied on her multiple times in military situations where diplomacy is required. This is unique given the rather anti-alien sentiments expressed by most soldiers especially since most of them have had to engage against Batarian forces."/
