Horror of Horrors!
"I can't believe it!" Your best friend Will grabs your arm.
The two of you have front row seats to see the MagnifiCAT, a famous magician. You think he's pretty weird considering his name and how he always dresses like a cat. But you agree to see the show anyway because Will is totally into magic...especially MagnifiCAT's.
On the stage, MagnifiCAT covers his hand with a white handkerchief. When he uncovers it, he is holding a bouquet of white roses...a light flashes and the bouquet turns into a dove.
Hmmm...that was cool! The dove flutters across the stage and disappears. The audience claps and Will tells you, "What did I say? Told you he had magical powers!"
"May I have two volunteers?" MagnifiCAT asks.
"Here!" Will calls, jumping to his feet. He pulls you up with him.
You try to pull Will down...
"You! In the first row." MagnifiCAT points at you and Will. "Go through the door on the left."
Uh-oh. Too late. You have no choice but to follow Will through the door.
As you walk down the narrow hallway in front of you, your stomach does this weird thing like when you take a fast elevator going down.
You look at Will and you see his face is green. "I feel sick," he complains.
"This is totally weird...let's just get out of here," you suggest.
"Are you crazy? And lose our chance to appear onstage with MagnifiCAT?" Will exclaims.
"I'd rather be in detention," you scoff.
"Chicken, chicken," Will taunts.
You roll your eyes. "Just remember, Will, this was YOUR idea."
The two of you walk down the dim hallway and open the door at the far end. Will steps through. "Oh, no!" He stops so suddenly that you bang into him.
"What?" you ask. "What's wrong?"
"Look!" Will whispers.
You step through the door and peek at the stage. Your eyes widen in shock.
MagnifiCAT looks different. His face is ghostly white, red sparks flash from his eyes, which are sunk deep into his skull. He's holding a cute little puppy. But it doesn't look very happy.
"Tell us your name," MaginifiCAT commands.
He holds a metal rod up to the dog's hind leg. ZAP! You see a spark. The dog gives one sharp bark. It sounds like, "Ralph."
The audience claps. "Well, Ralph, what is the opposite of smooth?"
ZAP! The frightened dog barks again.
"Rough," MagnifiCAT announces. "Very good."
You stare in shock. This guy's torturing that little puppy! "And now for our two volunteers," MagnifiCAT announces. "They'll remember this for the rest of their lives. Of course, that may not be very long..."
"Will," you whisper. "This guy's insane. Let's get out of here."
"No! He's coming!" Will replies. "We better hide. If he doesn't find us, he'll just go on with his act. Then we can escape."
