Savages of the Sacred Salvage

Now that you know what's become of Chameek, it's obvious there's nothing either of you can do.

The travelers seem nice enough but obviously have other things they'd prefer to be doing, with such dramatic events having happened recently. You mention that you're from Akema's tribe and offer to escort her home, an offer they gladly expect once she makes it clear she knows you and will cry again if they don't leave.

Akema is still grieving for Chameek, but you place a remembrance crystal for him on the lone Bright God you pass, and after a lot of time spent talking to her she seems to realize, as you both do, that nothing can change the past, and that everyone must live for today and tomorrow, and that Chameek wasn't ever going to amount to anything anyway, and she could probably do better than him, even with Veltan dead too. She dries her tears and washes her face on the banks of a river you cross, and you return her to her father, old man Haithim.

He doesn't recognize either of you, but is immensely relieved you're not there asking for a refund on the bride price after the wedding was called off. He also assumes you're reasonably competent people from Veltan's tribe to be sent on such an important errand, and offers you a job managing some of his herders. It's a pretty decent job...no one actually likes Haithim and most dislike him quite a bit, but you don't actually be around him to take care of goats, and you also gradually befriend all the herders and steal enough of the goats to make sure you and Bainto both live comfortably as you grow older.
