"Oh, really." You say. "So what do you do?" You hope your question doesn't scare him off since he seems shy about your career. He looks shyly at you.
"Oh well, I help track down people who went missing. Spy on suspects to a crime. Interrogate suspicious people." He says as casually as he can. This is perfect. He might know something about your parents! This still is a first date though. What do you do?
