A Day in the Life

Whatever, I'll be fast!

You run to the bathroom, comb your hair, go into your room and throw on the shirt and slacks you set out last night for work. You take a moment to look into the mirror. Hmm, you're not sure about this shirt today. You walk to the closet and throw open the doors. Let's see, this shirt is REALLY yellow. You aren't sure yellow is really your style. There's always blue. Or black. Or grey. You always wear those colors though. Maybe yellow will help you stand out to your boss who never seems to notice you. Your boss just disregards you and looks straight at the interpreter when you are talking. When your boss responds they say, "just tell them..." instead of addressing you directly. It drives you crazy! Maybe you should send out a polite memo to the office about how to have conversations with an interpreter present. It seems obvious enough to you but maybe it isn't since half the office doesn't acknowledge your presence when an interpreter is there. As you button on a dark blue shirt, you think about how you've been there for almost three years yet people with less experience have risen through the ranks while you've been left behind. As a matter of fact, you were there when your boss was hired and watched them get promoted over you. It's so unfair... you work just as hard and your numbers are just as good. It should go to the one who has been there the longest---

**PAUSE** and read You and Your Deaf Employee (pg. 2-3) and Deaf-Friendly Organizations (pg. 3-4).

SHOOT! The toaster oven!!!

You race to the kitchen. It's filled with smoke! Oh no, oh no! You throw on an oven mitt, rip open the toaster oven door, and pull out the wire tray with the strudel. It's completely black and still smoking so you throw it in the sink and turn on the faucet. Well. That was alarming. But all seems well despite your growling stomach.

It's time to leave the house! You step outside and are met with a burst of fresh air. The weather is really nice today. And glancing at your watch, you notice that you aren't running as far behind as you thought you were. Maybe enjoying some fresh air is just what you need to restart this day on a better foot?
