Dragon Charm
Hadley swung lazily in a hammock slung between two birch trees near her house, looking up at the stars. She ran her fingers through soft fur of her dog, Didi, who lay on her stomach. Didi sighed sleepily as Hadley rocked back and forth.
A bright green flash appeared between the twinkling stars. It lasted for only a second before disappearing, but the neon green light was unmistakable. Hadley started and sat up quickly, dumping Didi off her chest, who gave a whine of protest.
That signature green flash of light was the mating signal of a rare breed of dragon. Fae dragons are petite dragons that nest on tall trees, usually in the mountainous north. They are the shyest dragon breed and tend to stay far away from human settlements. That Hadley saw one here in town, and so far south too, was extremely unusual.
Hadley rushed inside her house and snatched a pair of binoculars out of a cluttered drawer. She ran back outside just in time to be rewarded with another flash of light. This blaze was more yellow than green-- a female's response to the previous signal. Hadley pointed her binoculars towards the source of the lights, but the dark sky made it impossible to see anything.
Another green burst of light appeared, followed by a responding yellow. These flashes were further away, towards the direction of Mt. Emerus. Another few flares confirmed Hadley's suspicion. The dragons were definitely heading towards the mountain.
