Erinyes Game

You tiptoe down the stairs and glance around the corner. Zeus and Demeter are talking, and you quietly inch closer, straining to hear their conversation.

“…can’t do this anymore,” Demeter is saying. “This awful…people are dying…want to leave—”

“You can’t leave,” Zeus interrupts. “Hades will…and…don’t want you to die…love you…”

“That’s nice, but…loved Poseidon and now look…what about Hera…”

“I don’t care…only you…please…don’t you remember…”

Zeus reaches for her, holding her close, and leans down to kiss her.

You stifle a gasp. Wasn’t Zeus going out with Hera? Why was he doing this in the middle of this game?

Demeter seems to have other ideas, because she pushes him away. “Don’t do that…won’t have it…”

Zeus, clearly not taking the hint, just grabs her again, ripping at her shirt.

Balling up your fists, you prepare to step in, but Demeter knees him where it hurts. When he’s bent over in pain, she slaps him full in the face.

“How dare…don’t you know that…”

Seeing that she’s got things under control, you sneak back up the steps to your room before you’re discovered. With your door finally closed, you let out a sigh and get ready for bed. Really, what was that even about…? You try not to dwell on it.

Your dreams are filled with red. Red blood, red hair, red flames. You’re consumed by it, burned up until there’s nothing left but ashes.
