Doorways

"Listen, lady, if your sister has to build a pyramid or something, that's your business, not mine. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to figure out exactly what's going on here."
You look around, nonplussed. Many townspeople are giving you odd looks. Perhaps this is on account of your anachronistic green-dyed hair and black clothing. A man in a brown cloak approaches you. "Come with me. You would do well to hide; being different is dangerous here."
He leads you to a small hatch in the ground. It barely prodrudes from the ground, and has been painted to blend in almost perfectly. Had the monk not pointed it out to you, you never would have seen it. He raps on it three times, each time producing a metallic thud. You find this odd, given that you are in the early middle ages. From within the hatch comes a voice: "Who's there?" it calls. "Only a humble leaf, blown here by the wind."
