The Great War, The German Middle Class Perspective.

It's been a year since the war began, and still, EVERYONE asks why I didn't go, why I didn't volunteer, why I didn't care enough about my country. My own father won't even look me in the eyes. What about the bravery of staying at home?! I think we eat less than the soldiers! That damned naval blockade is starving all of us. I'm sick of potato pancakes and beets, but, I'll gladly eat them instead of starving. The British and the French - and the Italians too, they're all starving us! I'm done with this. I'm volunteering.
