As the government continued to improve during the 1850's most people in Halifax were happy, unfortunately, many of your fellow shipwrights began to see themselves in debt. As technology was becoming more and more advanced, steamships start to emerge rather than your familiar wooden built ships (see primary sources). This put many of your co-workers out of work causing the ship building industry to decline rapidly.
