The story of one British Immigrant

The people around you begin demanding your government to change the way it works. The elected House of Assembly could only pass laws if the governor and council approved it. The governor was responsible to the British Colonial office, NOT the people of Nova Scotia. That meant the Colonial office could remove him if desired. The people wanted that right. A statement written by a man named Joseph Howe was published (see primary source), you read this letter and immediately realize the problems in the government. How states that people were forced to pay more taxes than what was right and that some officials took money from the public institutions that were set up to look after the poor. Howe brings to your attention that many rich people in Nova Scotia are choosing not to pay their taxes, making them richer and richer. This is forcing the government to raise the taxes to make up for the money lost.
