Solipsism

"So, they're just going to pop into existence as a fully formed society with all sorts of advanced technology?" asked the other voice.

I paused, trying to make sense of the question. "Well, they'll have fake memories, of course, but... yeah. How else would I do it?"

"Eh, I suppose you're right," said the other voice. "It just seems odd, is all."

If he'd had a body, I would have watched him for suspicious behavior. As it was, I really didn't have any other option than to get started. I opted to focus on a seaside nation, which originated as a global powerhouse due to its naval capacities. The steam and diesel powered technologies didn't harm its environment too much, and it was on the forefront of electronic and quantum technologies. "You know, this is kind of fun, creating a hypothetical history for this place," I said.

"Sounds boring to me," said the other voice.

"Then find something better to do. Away from me."

The other voice merely laughed in response. Well, it was worth a shot. I decided to stunt their exploration into space, to keep the action local, then let my creation come to life. It was refreshing to watch such an intelligent culture, though I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss the widespread belief and adoration of my existence.

"So, there are other nations, right?" said the other voice.

"Well... yes," I said. "I didn't pay as much attention to them as I did this one, but... yeah, of course there are. You can't have successful trade and commerce if you have no one to do business with."

"Oh, okay. I was just... you know, wondering. Carry on."

"I don't buy it," I said, trying to stay calm. "There is no way you're not up to something. What did you do?"

"Me? No. Nothing. Don't be so paranoid." said the other voice.
