Eternal
Epilogue 13: Eternal Harbinger
Year 101
“Semra, you can’t hide from me I know you’re here. I can sense the fear and terror in your living flesh. Do not be afraid, embrace the purity of death.” You say in a raspy voice while searching her private home.
You motion to your undead soldiers to keep all the entrances and exits blocked. You’re fairly certain you’ve got her trapped, but you want to make double sure. She’s always had a habit of getting away. Not this time.
“Semraaaa, come out to plaaaaay.” You say in a mocking tone.
Since your transformation you’ve been fairly no nonsense about the whole purging of the world, but this one…well this one is special. You don’t think the Great Death God would have any objections with you having a little fun. He’s probably busy tallying souls or something anyway.
Semra still has not shown herself, you continue to call to her.
“Semra are you really insisting on drawing this out? You know the end is coming soon, so just accept it! The derro certainly did. They even collectively stepped out on the surface to accept their fate. It was certainly a sight to see. Though you know I’m reminded of an old derro saying that sort of predicted such a thing. How did it go…”
You peek around a corner and see another empty room before continuing to move down the corridor.
“Oh yes it was… we’ve been here since this unforgiving world saw fit to expel us from her polluted womb. We’ll be here until death itself calls us all home from this nightmare we call life.”
No sooner have you finished the derro saying when Semra suddenly materializes and attempts to strike you with a magic bolt. She fails of course since you already knew where she was. Your minds may no longer be linked due to your undead state now, but you can sense the living pretty well now even when they’re invisible.
Dodging the shot, you return with two dark energy bolts of your own. Already tired from running from your previous duel earlier she dodges one, but not the other. She cries out in pain tumbling to the floor, but still having a bit of strength to drag herself into nearby room.
You quickly catch up to her and see her just in time to pull out her weapon, you easily knock it from her weakened hand at which point she backs away from you exhausted and scared (though she’s trying very hard not to show it) A quick glance and you see she has no exits. You also see that this must be her bedroom. Figures it would end here.
“I would’ve thought a woman like you would face death with at least some sort of dignity.” You say.
“And I would’ve thought a so called honorable warrior like yourself would’ve fought to the bitter end rather than becoming…whatever it is you are now.” Semra answers.
“Well I guess we’re both still full of surprises. However, what won’t be surprising here today is your death and you remember this dagger? This is going to be the cause. This has been a long time coming Semra.”
Semra says nothing she just begins to breath in and out heavy like she’s having a panic attack. Her breathing gets harder and her eyes begin to water as you approach closer.
“Wait…you promised me one thing if you ever were going to kill me. You promised me, you would kiss me as you stuck the blade in. I think you owe me that much.”
You can’t help but smile a bit at that request. Semra if nothing else has been forever consistent with you.
“Very well…Mistress…for old time’s sake.” you say and move in closer with the dagger in hand.
Semra seems to calm down a bit when you accept her request. She opens her arms and embraces you…embraces death in a way that she feels comfortable with. You plunge the dagger in hard and twist with one hand and wrap your other arm around her.
Even without the dagger Semra is already feeling her life draining away just being this close to you. Your faces no longer far apart you stare at each other for a brief moment…perhaps even contemplating if things had been different that the two of you could have had a future together.
“Remember this.” You say and place your fleshless mouth against her still full blood red ruby lips.
It is literally a kiss of death as you proceed to drain the life out of her body. Towards the end she clutches you tighter until her life force is all gone and only a husk remains.
All her beauty, all her goals, all that she ever was all that she is and all that she ever will be just gone forever.
You leave the keep and realize that the last remaining tie to your mortal life is gone. There is literally nothing left now and that is truly freedom.
You continue to carry out the purging of your world, which doesn’t take much longer, and when it’s finally over you are called back to the Death God’s plane and your new home.
“You have done well harbinger, unfortunately I have no immediate tasks for you, so you’ll have to go into a kind of sleep for a while. Not to worry though; you’ll be perfectly fine. Now sleep harbinger and dream of past glories, victories yet to come and the joy of bringing death to all those that oppose you.”
And so you sleep until such time when the Death God needs you again.
Decades, centuries, and millennia pass as you are periodically called to carry out the destruction of world after world. Eventually time has no more meaning at all and you have forgotten your old life completely…
Well perhaps not completely, you still always remember that you are and now truly will always be ETERNAL.
