Relic
You have never heard any sort of animal sound like that. It had a human like quality to it almost. Nonetheless it was terrifying and the present location is not any place for an encounter with a potentially dangerous creature.
“We need to move…NOW.”
The group responds enthusiastically to your request and you all begin to run. Snapping tree limps and rustling bushes are heard behind you as whatever it is now seems to be chasing you. Great.
“Pick it up people, pick it up!”
“Oh God, it’s getting closer!” screams Wren
You start sprinting with all your might, sucking in gasps of horrible, hot air. Farther down the path the mist becomes even thicker, reducing visibility. Even without the mist you still probably would have never seen the root sticking out, due to the speed of your gait. You snag the root and fall, spiraling down an incline. You roll a couple times farther down, landing ass first into a pile of goopy mush. Your legs sink into the goop to your knees. You attempt to stand but sink even more. Finally you come to the horrible realization you have just fallen into a pit of quicksand.
Luckily you are not alone and the group is almost too where you are. Skye gets to you first. She is gasping for air as a panicked look crosses her face as she sees you are now waist deep in the sand.
“Skye….listen carefully you need to help me quickly before I go under. Try to find a long branch.”
Her eyes go wide and she begins to hyper ventilate. Now you are starting to panic as you sink.
“Skye…PLEASE! You need to help me RIGHT NOW or I’m going to get sucked down!”
Skye collapses in front of you, frozen with fear. Raoul and Wren then arrive in front of the pit.
“Oh God…” states Wren as she sees the predicament.
“ A STICK! GET A DAMN STICK OR IM GOING TO DIE!”
Raoul twists around, quickly looking for a branch. Gunfire from Bailey’s shotgun can be heard close by.
“There is nothing! Quick Leo, throw me your equipment!”
“WHAT?! WHY!?”
“It won’t weigh you down as much!”
“THAT’S NOT HOW IT WORKS! PULL ME OUT!”
“Wren, my dear, quickly, reach out to Leo. I will hold onto your ankles.”
“I’m not letting you touch me pretty boy!”
“FOR GODS SAKE WOMAN DO WHAT HE SAYS!” You explode as the sand is now past your chest, your arms raised in desperation.
Wren huffs, then lies on the ground, crawling into the quicksand. Raoul is tightly gripping her ankles as she reaches her hands to yours. You grip tightly.
“PULL!” shouts Wren.
Raoul uses all his strength, his biceps bulging as he pulls Wren out with you close behind. You breathe a sigh of relief. You see Bailey, walking backwards to where the group is, firearm smoking.
“Bailey! Is it still in pursuit?” Asks Raoul.
“…It’s gone.” Bailey says, not turning around.
“What was it?” You ask.
No response.
“Bailey?”
“…Not human.” He states.
“What do you mean not human?” Asks Wren.
Bailey turns and begins to continue down the path. He rests the shotgun on his shoulder.
